The short answer
On June 2, 2026, OpenAI notified developers using older GPT Image models of their deprecation and removal from the API on December 1, 2026. The list: gpt-image-1-mini, gpt-image-1.5 (gpt-image-1.5-2025-12-16) and chatgpt-image-latest. OpenAI's recommended replacement is gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare. OpenAI shut down gpt-image-1 itself on October 23, 2026.
What to do
- Search your app's code and settings for the image model name.
- Switch it to gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare, and test an image before the removal date.
- Ask your AI tool: "Find every OpenAI image model name in this app. If it uses gpt-image-1.5, gpt-image-1-mini or chatgpt-image-latest, switch it to gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare and test one image."
