The short answer
OpenAI's shutdown date for a set of older models in the API is October 23, 2026. Its deprecations page lists them under "Legacy GPT model snapshots", including gpt-3.5-turbo, gpt-4-turbo, gpt-4.1-nano, gpt-4o-2024-05-13, gpt-image-1, o1, o3-mini and o4-mini. OpenAI names a substitute for each: mostly gpt-5.6-sol, gpt-5.6-terra or gpt-5.6-luna, and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare for gpt-image-1. If your app's AI feature fails after that date, check which model it calls.
What to do
- Search your app's code and settings for every OpenAI model name.
- If a name is on the shutdown list, switch it to the substitute OpenAI names.
- Test a request before you ship.
- Ask your AI tool: "Find every OpenAI model name in this app's code and settings. If one is on OpenAI's October 23, 2026 shutdown list, switch it to the substitute OpenAI names and test one request."
Good to know
- The full list also includes gpt-4 (gpt-4-0613), gpt-4-1106-preview, o1-pro and the fine-tuned models ft-gpt-3.5-turbo, ft-gpt-4, ft-gpt-4.1-nano, ft-o4-mini, ft-babbage-002 and ft-davinci-002.
