The short answer
On October 14, 2026, OpenAI notified developers using certain GPT-4 series models of their deprecation and removal from the API on January 14, 2027. The list includes GPT-4o mini, GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, each with gpt-6-luna as the recommended replacement. The plain gpt-4o-mini name points to the gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18 snapshot, and OpenAI's model page marks it as deprecated.
What to do
- Search your app's code and settings for gpt-4o-mini, gpt-4o, gpt-4.1 and gpt-4.1-mini.
- Switch to gpt-6-luna, the replacement OpenAI recommends, and test a request before the shutdown date.
- Check fine-tuned models too: they follow the same shutdown schedule as their base models.
- Ask your AI tool: "Find every OpenAI model name in this app. If it uses gpt-4o-mini, gpt-4o, gpt-4.1 or gpt-4.1-mini, list where, suggest the replacement OpenAI names, and test one request after switching."
Good to know
- The snapshots on the list: gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-11-20, gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-4.1-2025-04-14 and gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14.
- OpenAI uses "shut down" to mean a model or endpoint is no longer accessible.
