The short answer
On June 11, 2026, OpenAI notified developers using older GPT-5 and o3 model snapshots of their deprecation and removal from the API on December 11, 2026. At the time of the shutdown, the model or endpoint will no longer be accessible. OpenAI's deprecations table lists each dated snapshot and its recommended replacement.
What to do
- Search your code for the exact model name your app sends, like gpt-5-mini-2025-08-07.
- Check it against OpenAI's list: gpt-5-2025-08-07 and o3-2025-04-16 go to gpt-5.6-sol, gpt-5-mini-2025-08-07 to gpt-5.6-terra, gpt-5-nano-2025-08-07 to gpt-5.6-luna, and gpt-5-pro-2025-10-06 and o3-pro-2025-06-10 to gpt-5.6-sol with reasoning.mode pro.
- Switch to the replacement and test it before December 11, 2026.
- Ask your AI tool: "Find every OpenAI model name this app sends. Tell me if any is on OpenAI's December 11, 2026 shutdown list, and where to change it."
Good to know
- OpenAI's page doesn't say what happens to the short model names (aliases), so check the exact name your app sends.
