The short answer
Stripe's refunds docs say you can cancel a payment before it's completed at no cost, or refund all or part of a payment after it succeeds, but Stripe's processing fees from the original transaction aren't returned. Refunds use your available Stripe balance, not including pending amounts.
What to do
- If the payment hasn't completed yet, cancel it instead: that's at no cost.
- Check that your available balance covers the refund. If it doesn't, Stripe holds card refunds as pending until your balance is sufficient, and refunds for other payment methods fail.
- Tell your customer the refund shows up as a credit approximately 5-10 business days later, depending on their bank.
- Ask your AI tool: "Add an admin button that refunds a Stripe payment by its ID, shows the refund status, and tells me if my available balance is too low."
Good to know
- You can't refund a payment that's already disputed.
