Customer disputed a payment on Stripe? What it costs and what to do

The short answer

When a customer disputes a payment (a chargeback), Stripe debits the disputed amount, plus a dispute fee, from your Stripe account. On Stripe's US pricing page, the dispute fee is $15.00 for each dispute, and unless your Stripe contract says otherwise, Stripe never returns it. Responding costs another $15.00, which you get back only if you win. You usually have 7 to 21 days to respond, depending on the card network.

What to do

  1. Note the response deadline as soon as the dispute arrives. If you don't respond before it, you automatically lose the dispute.
  2. Respond with your evidence in Stripe.
  3. Don't refund on the side: while a dispute is open, you can't issue a refund outside the dispute process.
  4. Ask your AI tool: "Make my app's Stripe receipts and statement descriptor clearly show my app's name, and add a page where customers can ask for a refund before they go to their bank."

Good to know

  • $15.00 is Stripe's US pricing. Other countries differ.
  • The cardholder's bank can take up to 3 months to decide, and responding is no promise of winning.
  • Clear receipts and an easy refund page are our prevention idea, not Stripe's advice.
