Gemini API storing your app's requests? New paid projects log by default

Ship ItChecked against the official source

The short answer

Google's Gemini API changelog of October 26, 2026 says new projects using the Generate Content API on the paid tier store requests by default (store=true). Existing projects keep their current setting: projects created before that date don't store Generate Content requests unless logging was enabled in AI Studio. Stored logs appear in your Google AI Studio dashboard and expire after a default retention window of 55 days.

What to do

  1. To opt out, set store=false on individual requests, or turn off Generate Content API logging in the Settings panel of the Logs and Datasets dashboard.
  2. If you keep the logs, set the retention to 7, 14, 28 or 55 days.
  3. Ask your AI tool: "Find every Gemini API call in this app and show me whether it stores requests. Unless I decide we need the logs, set store to false on each request."

Good to know

  • Log storage is only available on the Gemini API paid tier. Logs saved to a dataset don't expire with the retention window.
  • Our tip: if your users type personal information, decide this on purpose and mention it in your privacy policy.
