The short answer
Anthropic's rate limits page says each of the Start, Build and Scale tiers carries a monthly spend cap: $500, $1,000 and $200,000. Once you reach your tier's cap, the API returns 429 with "You have reached your API usage limits", and API usage pauses until 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next month, unless you request a higher limit sooner. Retrying, including the SDK's automatic retries, fails until access resumes.
What to do
- In the Claude Console, use Request tier increase on the Rate limits page. Moving to a higher tier restores access.
- Ask your AI tool: "When the Claude API returns an error with error_code enforced_spend_limit_reached, stop retrying, show users a friendly 'AI is paused' message, and log it so I see it."
Good to know
- A spend limit you set yourself is different: it returns HTTP 400.
- This is about the Claude API, not Claude Pro or Max subscriptions.
