The short answer
Without Next.js or SvelteKit, every API file maps directly to one Vercel Function: five files inside api/ create five Vercel Functions. On the Hobby plan, this is limited to 12 Vercel Functions per deployment. Next.js and SvelteKit bundle server code into the fewest functions possible, so Vercel says you're unlikely to hit the limit there.
What to do
- Count the files in your api/ folder.
- More than 12? Merge related endpoints into fewer files, or upgrade to Pro, where functions created per deployment have no limit.
- Ask your AI tool: "Count the API files in my api/ folder. If there are more than 12, merge related endpoints into fewer files without changing what they do."
Good to know
- Merging endpoints is our suggestion. Vercel's docs only say each file is one function.
