Block AI training bots but stay in AI answers? Vercel Firewall now splits them

The short answer

Vercel's changelog of October 29, 2026 says you can now log or block requests from AI crawlers and AI assistants separately with the AI Bots managed ruleset in Vercel Firewall. AI crawlers are bots that collect content for indexing and model training. AI assistants are bots that fetch pages in response to user actions or search queries. So you can block AI crawlers while allowing AI assistants to retrieve your content to answer users' questions. The ruleset is available on all plans.

What to do

  1. Open your project's Security, Firewall, Rules page.
  2. Under Bot Management, enable AI Bots and select the gear icon beside it.
  3. Set an action for AI crawlers and for AI assistants, then review and publish your changes. You can also change these settings with the Vercel CLI.

Good to know

  • Vercel updates the rules as new bots are added.
  • Our tip: start by logging both groups, look at what actually visits your site, then decide what to block.
