Shared your website link but no image shows up? Fix og:image

Ship ItChecked against the official source

The short answer

Facebook reads the og:image tag to pick the image that appears when someone shares your page. Meta suggests images of at least 1200 x 630 pixels for the best display on high resolution devices. And the crawler has to see an image at least once before it can be rendered, so the first person who shares a page won't see a rendered image.

What to do

  1. Add an og:image tag with the URL of your image, at least 1200 x 630 pixels.
  2. Before you share, run the URL through Meta's Sharing Debugger to pre-fetch the page's metadata. Or add og:image:width and og:image:height tags so the crawler can render the image immediately.
  3. Replaced the image? Use a new URL for the new image, or it won't be updated.

Good to know

  • This is how Facebook handles link previews. Meta's page doesn't cover other apps.
