The short answer
OpenAI removes gpt-image-1.5, gpt-image-1-mini and chatgpt-image-latest from the API on December 1, 2026. The recommended replacement for all three is gpt-image-2.6-sunburst or gpt-image-2.6-flare, released on November 4, 2026. OpenAI's image generation guide: Sunburst is for detailed visual work and Flare for fast iteration.
What to do
- Find every image generation or edit call that uses one of the removed models.
- Switch the model to gpt-image-2.6-flare for fast everyday images, or gpt-image-2.6-sunburst for detailed work.
- Retest your prompts and image sizes before December 1.
Good to know
- Both new models support adjustable complexity, SVG generation, and animated GIF generation, plus markup-guided editing. If you omit complexity, both use high.
- Retesting prompts is our tip: a new model can produce different results.
