Google Play says your app must target API level 36? What to change

Ship ItChecked against the official source

The short answer

Starting August 31, 2026, new apps and app updates must target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher to be submitted to Google Play. Apps already on the store must target Android 15 (API level 35) or higher to remain available to new users on devices running a newer Android version. If you need more time, you can request an extension to November 1, 2026.

What to do

  1. Change one setting: targetSdkVersion, the target API level, to 36.
  2. Capacitor 8's Android values set targetSdkVersion = 36, and Expo SDK 54 and newer target 36. Upgrading Capacitor or the Expo SDK can need other code changes.
  3. Rebuild, test on a phone and upload the update again.
  4. Ask your AI tool: "Update this Android project to target API level 36 and tell me what else must change before I rebuild."

Good to know

  • This covers phone apps. Wear OS, TV and Automotive have their own levels.
