Lost your Android upload key? Google Play can reset it

Ship ItChecked against the official source

The short answer

Google Play's Play App Signing page says that if you lose your upload key or suspect that it was compromised, you are not locked out of your app. With Play App Signing, Google holds the app signing key and can reset your upload key for you. The real risk is the other key: an app signing key cannot be reset if you manage it yourself (without Play App Signing) and lose it.

What to do

  1. Create a new upload key in Android Studio and export its certificate to PEM format.
  2. In Play Console, in the Upload key certificate section, click Request upload key reset, enter the reason and upload the certificate.
  3. Back up your keys and keystore passwords somewhere safe.
  4. Ask your AI tool: "Tell me where this project's Android signing keys and keystore passwords are configured, and list what I should back up somewhere safe."

Good to know

  • The reset is for the upload key when your app uses Play App Signing.
