The short answer
GitHub Pages is a static site hosting service that takes HTML, CSS and JavaScript files straight from a repository. With GitHub Free it's available in public repositories only, so your code is visible to everyone. GitHub says Pages is not intended or allowed to be used as free hosting to run your online business, an e-commerce site, or commercial software as a service (SaaS). It's good for a portfolio, docs or a landing page, not for an app with logins or payments.
What to do
- On GitHub Free your code is public, so check that no API keys are committed.
- Don't use a Pages site for sensitive transactions like sending passwords or credit card numbers: GitHub says Pages sites shouldn't be used for that.
- For an app with logins or payments, pick a host whose plan allows commercial use.
Good to know
- Limits: published sites may be no larger than 1 GB, with a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month, and deployments time out after 10 minutes.
