The short answer
GitHub's docs say Copilot usage is measured in AI credits, and all Copilot plans include a monthly allowance (1 AI credit = $0.01 USD). Copilot Pro costs $10 a month with 1,500 AI credits (1,000 base plus 500 flex), Pro+ $39 with 7,000, and Max $100 with 20,000. Included AI credits do not carry over between months, and the allowance resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month.
What to do
- Out of credits? Upgrade your plan. You pay the price difference.
- Or set a budget for additional usage, so you can keep working.
- Or wait until the next monthly cycle, when your included usage resets.
Good to know
- The cost of an interaction depends on the model used and the number of tokens consumed. A quick question with a lightweight model costs a fraction of a credit; a long cloud agent session using a frontier model across multiple files costs more.
- Copilot Free and Copilot Student have an allowance of AI credits with auto model selection, and Copilot Free includes 2000 code completions per month.
- These are the individual plans. Business and Enterprise plans work differently.
