The short answer
GitHub's changelog of October 15, 2026 says GitHub will deprecate Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra across all GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions, on November 16, 2026. The suggested alternative for both Claude models is Claude Opus 5.5; for GPT-5.6 Terra it's GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna.
What to do
- Pick a supported model in Copilot Chat's model selector before November 16, 2026.
- Update any workflows and integrations that use the old models.
Good to know
- Claude Opus 4.8 will remain available to individual GitHub Copilot subscribers on annual plans.
- For Copilot Business and Enterprise, the suggested alternatives are automatically enabled under default model enablement, unless an administrator has turned off the global default.
- No action is required to remove the models after they have been deprecated.
