The short answer
Google's Gemini API deprecations page lists gemini-2.0-flash and gemini-2.0-flash-lite with a shutdown date of June 1, 2026, and marks both as already shut down. Once a model is shut down, it is completely turned off and the endpoint is no longer available. So an app that still calls gemini-2.0-flash gets failed requests.
What to do
- Find every Gemini model name in your code, including code your AI tool wrote.
- Compare each one with Google's current models page before you ship, and replace any that are shut down.
- For new projects, Google says to use its latest models: 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash.
- Ask your AI tool: "Find every Gemini model name in this project. Compare each with Google's current models page, tell me which are shut down or limited, and switch them to a current model I approve."
Good to know
- The 2.5 models aren't deprecated, but Google says it is limiting access to them to users who have actively used them in the past.
- Model names change fast. Check Google's models page for the current list.
