The short answer
Firebase's phone auth docs say that for new projects, the default SMS region policy allows no regions. If phone sign-in works with your test number but real users never get the code, set this policy in the Firebase console and allow the countries your app serves. Firebase's FAQ adds that starting September 2024, Firebase projects must be linked to a Cloud Billing account to enable and use the SMS service.
What to do
- In the Firebase console, open Authentication, then Settings, then SMS region policy.
- Allow only the markets your app is meant for. Firebase also suggests denying regions with low success rates.
- Check that your Firebase project is linked to a Cloud Billing account.
- Ask your AI tool: "My Firebase phone login sends no codes. Walk me through the SMS region policy and billing settings, and list the countries my app actually serves."
Good to know
- Firebase says setting an SMS region policy can help protect your apps from SMS abuse. Success rates lower than 50% imply many sent SMS but few successful logins, a common indicator of bad actors and SMS traffic pumping. Healthy rates are commonly 70-85%.
