The short answer
Google Cloud's runtime support schedule lists Node.js 20 (nodejs20) with a deprecation date of April 30, 2026 and a decommission date of October 30, 2026. After the decommission date, you can no longer create or update functions on that runtime, and functions that stay on it may be disabled. Node.js 22 is supported, with a decommission date of October 31, 2027.
What to do
- Check the version: Firebase sets it in the engines field of the package.json in your functions/ directory, or as the runtime in firebase.json, which the Firebase CLI prefers.
- Before you upgrade, Firebase lists: be on the Blaze pricing plan and use Firebase CLI v11.18.0 or later.
- Change the version to 22, then redeploy your functions.
- Ask your AI tool: "Check which Node.js version my Firebase functions use, in functions/package.json and firebase.json. If it's 20, change it to 22, then tell me how to redeploy and test."
Good to know
- Firebase's own versions page still lists Node.js 20. The dates come from Google Cloud's schedule, which Firebase links to as the support schedule.
