The short answer
GitHub's blog (March 25, 2026): from April 24, 2026, interaction data from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users (inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context) "will be used to train and improve GitHub's AI models unless they opt out". GitHub's docs list Copilot Max too. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise users are not affected. Private repositories "at rest" aren't used, but code Copilot processes while you are actively using it counts.
What to do
- Click your profile picture, then Copilot settings.
- Set "Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training" to Disabled.
- Ask your AI tool: "List the files in this project that hold customer data, keys or anything private, so I know what not to open while an AI assistant is running."
Good to know
- Already opted out of GitHub's older product-improvement setting? GitHub says that preference was kept.
- These steps come from GitHub's docs. We didn't check them in a logged-in account, so the settings page may look a little different.
