Claude Code keeps asking permission? Use auto mode, not skip-permissions

The short answer
Claude Code has permission modes, and you switch them with Shift+Tab in the CLI. In auto mode, "a second model, the classifier, reviews actions instead of you". The --dangerously-skip-permissions flag is different: it equals bypassPermissions mode, which "disables permission prompts and safety checks". The docs say to use that only in isolated environments like containers, VMs, or dev containers without internet access.
What to do
- Press Shift+Tab in the CLI to switch modes, or use the mode selector in VS Code and Desktop.
- Tired of approving every action? Use auto mode. With v2.1.283 or later, it's the starting mode for interactive terminal and VS Code sessions.
- Keep --dangerously-skip-permissions for isolated containers or VMs without internet access, where Claude Code cannot damage your host system.
- Ask your AI tool: "Look at the commands I approved this session and suggest allow rules only for safe, repeated ones like running tests. Don't suggest anything that deletes files or touches my keys."
Good to know
- Auto mode is a review by a second model, not a guarantee.
- Your deny rules block in every mode, including bypassPermissions.
