Does your AI chatbot have to say it's AI? (EU AI Act, Article 50)

The short answer

In the EU, Article 50 of the AI Act applies from 2 August 2026. AI systems that interact with people must inform them that they're interacting with an AI system, unless that's obvious, and the European Commission says that exception should be interpreted narrowly. The simple fix is to label it.

What to do

  1. Label the chatbot, for example "AI assistant", right in the chat window.
  2. Have users in the EU? Read the Commission's FAQ on Article 50.
